  • Watch our video Thank You, Veterans! to give children background on who veterans are and why it’s important to honor them. After watching, ask: “Do you think being in the armed forces is hard work? Why?”
  • Read the magazine together.
  • Use the Show What You Know skill sheet as a follow-up activity. You can project it and discuss the questions together, or send it home for kids to work on with families.
  • Practice patterning and watch a virtual parade by playing our online game Parade Patterns.
  • Practice sight words to reveal a mystery picture with our Color by Sight Word skill sheet.

Materials: letter template, crayons

Operation Gratitude is a great organization that collects and sends letters, cards, artwork, and care packages to troops and veterans.

  • Create thank-you letters with the template. Children can use the issue for ideas for pictures to draw, or they can draw whatever they like! Any drawing is bound to make our troops’ day. Then follow these guidelines:
  • Bundle letters to deployed troops separately from those to veterans, and label accordingly. No envelopes are needed for individual letters.
  • Use children’s first names ONLY. DO include your school’s contact information (address or email). Troops love to write back if time allows! Put all letters and artwork in a large envelope or box and ship to:
